THE UTEP SUMMER RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATES
IN MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR BIOLOGY

THE UTEP SUMMER REU PROGRAM Minimize

The UTEP Dept. of Biological Sciences is hosting a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates in Molecular and Cellular Biology during the summers of 2009 - 2012.  The main goal of the program is to provide eight participating students with a nurturing and exciting environment in which to obtain the tools, information, and research experience that encourages the pursuit of graduate careers in science.

The program lasts for 10 weeks throughout the summer.  For 2009, the program begins on Tuesday, May 26th and ends on Friday, July 31st.  Students arrive the weekend before the initiation of the program and depart the weekend after termination of the program.  Travel expenses to and from El Paso are provided (if travel is required). Student participants are encouraged to live on campus at Miner Village, at the expense of the program, with fellow participants and with participants from other summer programs.

Student participants will receive a $4500 stipend for their participation in the program.  No additional funds (such as a meal allowance, computer allowance, etc) are provided.

Program Goals Minimize

The overall goals of the program are to:

  • Provide undergraduate students an opportunity to conduct full-time collaborative research with a faculty mentor
  • Encourage enrollment in graduate school through a seminar series in which academic and non-academic careers in science are discussed
  • Instill a sense of community through extensive student-faculty and student-student interaction promoted by weekly gatherings (research meetings and social/cultural activities) with fellow participants, UTEP undergraduate students, UTEP graduate students, and UTEP Biology faculty
  • Improve student confidence and communication skills through oral and written presentations of their results in conjunction with Career Development Workshops

Although not strictly limited to this geographical area, recruiting efforts will be focused on students who are from the southwest U.S.- Mexico border region.  Students in underrepresented minority groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
