University of Texas at El Paso

Established as the Texas State School of Mines in 1914, the University of Texas in El Paso (UTEP) has become the only research-intensive university that serves a Hispanic-majority student population (Carnegie Classification of Higher Education Institutions). Now serving a student body in excess of 22,000, we are focused on increasing access to future students, advancing the capacity of higher education programs for current students, and becoming a national model in educating the next generation work force. At UTEP, we’re proud to have a NASA MUREP Aerospace Academy for the Southwest (MAA Southwest), formerly known as NASA Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy (SEMAA), that touts the opportunities and excitement that Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) offer in the Southwest region. We will provide this service to K-12 with age appropriate lessons that are conceptually enriched with science and engineering concepts.

MAA Southwest a nationally renowned and progressive education leading program, was founded to inspire, engage and educate students, parents and communities. The UTEP MAA Southwest uses NASA provided curriculum enhancement activities in schools and through camp sessions at UTEP to stimulate conceptual learning that builds math and science proficiency. To compliment the lower grade activities, a NASA provided Aerospace Education Lab (AEL) is available for microgravity, flight simulation and remote sensing activities using an electronically enhanced, computerized classroom.

UTEP and NASA believe in fostering learning and support systems beyond the K-12 classroom. UTEP MAA Southwest has a Family Involvement for skill development, talks on modern concerns and education support. The MAA Southwest is teamed with a NASA University Research Center, the MIRO Center for Space Exploration Technology and Research, which shows the opportunity that exists from K-12 through higher education and the result of advanced research off topics similar to those of the MAA Southwest and AEL. Offering community talks and tours, school visits, science fairs and trips to NASA that complement the educating sessions of MAA Southwest, we are here to build a better tomorrow through an exciting today.
