The Scholarship/Stipend and Mentoring Support (SSaMS) Project is designed for pre-service teachers who are juniors or seniors with a major in mathematics, science, technology or engineering professionals who are enrolled in an alternative certification program. Scholars will receive a stipend of $7,500 a year distributed in 3 parts. During a year scholars will participate in an action research project in a team composed of a University Faculty Mentor, a NOYCE Scholar and a PETE Teacher Mentor
Program goals
Increase the number of teachers qualified to teach mathematics and science at the middle and high school level.
Develop communities of practice around teaching and research into the teaching and learning of mathematics and science
Create systems of support designed to facilitate induction, retention, and development of the professionalism of beginning teachers.
Program requirements*
Junior, Senior Status or be a participant in the ACP Program.
Math, Science, Engineering or Technology major.
GPA 3.0
Complete the Program of Study.
Copy of academic transcript and a copy of current degree plan.
Two letters of recommendation.
Be enrolled full time: 12 hours for Undergraduates and 9 hours for Graduates during the Spring and Fall semesters. During the summer both Undergraduates and Graduates need to be enrolled in 6 credit hours.
To conduct action/classroom research activities under the supervision of a UTEP professor and in collaboration with PETE students and mentor-teachers.
To participate in bi-weekly NOYCE seminar.
To teach mathematics or science in a high need public school for at least two (2) years after the completion of degree/certification.
To participate in PETE evaluation activities for at least one (1) year after the completion of degree/certification.
To participate in summer program (TexPREP) during award period.
* Failure to meet participation requirements will result in cancellation of active scholarship funding and students will be required to pay back funds spent to date.
