Partnerships/Collaborations
The El Paso Texas Prefreshman Engineering Program was made possible due to a partnership/collaboration between the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Texas at El Paso; Dr. Joe Guthrie, Chair, and the College of Teacher Education at the University of Texas at El Paso; Dr. Arturo Pacheco, Dean. The El Paso Texas Prefreshman Engineering Program has outstanding support from the community and from the collaborating school districts. In

1991 a steering committee was formed representing all segments of the El Paso community. The founding members of the committee include J. J. Armes, former City Councilman; Mr. Romero of LULAC; Dr. Marsha Conley from the El Paso Natural Gas Company; Dr. Alan Dean, UTEP Physics Department, retired; Marsha Self from El Paso Community College; the Rev. J. M. Washington of the NAACP (Committee Chairperson): and the Rev. Larry Williams of the Black Ministers’ Alliance. The primary responsibilities of the Committee are to recruit female and minority students, publicize the program, help organize the business community for both direct and indirect financial support, and recruit volunteers and guest speakers.

The three major school districts in the region and outlying districts signed statements of agreement as cooperating partners in the 2001 TexPREP Program as part of the proposals submitted to the Eisenhower Program. The districts agreed to (1) allow the

distribution of brochures/applications in all district middle schools and high schools; (2) invite the Project Director or his representative to school as needed to explain the program to students, teachers, counselors, principals, or parents; and (3) authorize counselors, teachers, and principals to assist in participant recruitment.
