The Center for Environmental Resource Management (CERM) at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is a recipient of the 2007 Texas Environmental Excellence Special Award given by the Texas Comission on Environmental Quality.  This is the second time CERM receives this state-wide recognition.  The first time CERM was a recipient of the award was back in 2000 under Texas Governor George W. Bush.  The 2007 award was for the university's Healthy Home Environments program, which is a community-based program for improving the household environent in the homes of residents of the Paso del Norte Region.

CERM developed Agua Para Beber (Drinking Water), a community-based program for improving water quality and promoting safe hygiene practices in low-income border communities.  Agua Para Beber combines a hygiene education and water purification program with the distribution of low-cost, drinking water receptacles and utilizes the services of volunteer health promoters for implementation.  The goal of the program is to offer an intermediate solution to help improve the safety of drinking water, and thus, the quality of life for border residents.

The program was funded by the Paso del Norte Health Foundation, Johnson & Johnson and internal CERM funding.  Through the generosity of our sponsors and professional hard work of its staff and partners, Healthy Home Environments is helping to improve the environment and quality of life of residents in the Paso del Norte Region.

The Center for Environmental Resource Management (CERM) and the Geological Sciences Department at UTEP have provided the oportunity to participate in our annual ¨Environmental Summer Camps". During 2008 we had over 100 campers during our 6 weeks of camps.

Kids ages 7-11 play learning about humans and their interaction with the natural environment. The weekly camps are designed for the kids to learn from a variety of topics related to our changing earth such as energy, water, land, air, and ecology. Kids go through interactive presentations, hands-on activities and even a field trip to the largest city-owned park; The Rio Bosque Wetlands Park in far east El Paso.

If you like to enroll your kid for our 2009 camp please contact us at 915-747-8626 or by e-mail at pjuarez@utep.edu or abarud@utep.edu. The camp fee is $20 dlls. per kid; fee waiver is available upon request.

The Millennium Lecture Series brings speakers to the UTEP campus to address topics that impact our society, our culture, and our lives. The lectures in this Series are intended to provoke our thinking and stimulate discussion.

During 2006-2007, the Millennium Series explored a topic that is much on our minds: Our Changing Environment.

Although our environment is always changing, the recent rate, magnitude and direction of such changes have captured our attention. Many of us now think and talk often about such issues as climate change, resource depletion, energy use and production, and environmental impacts on human health.

We invite you to join us in learning more about these important topics from the distinguished group of speakers who have shared their expertise with us by watching the various talks by recorded video.
