| Background Information:
The Materials Corridor Partnership Initiative (MCI) for the U.S.- Mexico Southwest Border Region is a binational program funded in the U.S. by the U.S. Department of Energy and in Mexico by the National Council for Science & Technology (CONACyT). MCI establishes the basis for promotion and implementation of materials research and technology transfer, focusing its objectives on reaching a sustainable economic development throughout the region. |

Teamwork across the border
Many universities partake on this great opportunity. The Materials Corridor Initiative is a binational multiregional research and technology activity involving eight U.S. academic research institutions in the U.S.-Mexico border region. |

Major Areas of Focus
Materials Corridor research is focused on "energy efficient, environmentally friendly materials and materials processing for sustainable economic development." The participating Mexican institutions have received support since 1999 from CONACyT. Since FY 2001, funding for U.S. universities has come from the Border Technology Partnership Project (BTPP) under DOE/Carlsbad, with more than $2.2 million having been allocated for 21 projects.

| Conclusion
Prosperity and security in both the United States and Mexico are highly dependent on the economic and environmental health of the United States/Mexico border region. Energy security and independence are also a high priority for this region. In order to achieve these objectives the Materials Corridor Initiative (MCI) was funded by the Department of Energy in 2000. |
