The fourth project, Environmental PAHs in Air and Soil as Potential Triggers of Asthma, will expose biological assays, associated with known or suspected pathways of asthma exacerbation, to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons extracted from soil and air samples. This study will produce a better understanding about the effects of suspected asthma triggers, PAHs, and of the mechanisms through which those triggers operate. Prof Burchiel, who is also the Associate Dean for Research of the UNM College of Pharmacy, is the project leader. Profs Rodrigo Armijos and Wen-Yee Lee of UTEP are co-investigators, as is Fredine Lauer of UNM HSC.
