H.E.L.P. for Kids: In-home Asthma and Risk Reduction Education for Border Children

Background

In collaboration with promotoras from Dona Ana County the Center for Environmental Resource Management implemented the H.E.L.P. for Kids: In-home Asthma and Risk Reduction Education for Border Children, a community-based educational project with funds from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 6 from October 2004 to January 31 2006.

The overall goal of the project was to provide education “tailored” to the needs of each family and distribute materials to minimize household environmental health risks and reduce respiratory problems and risks for children. The target population was low income Hispanic families from Doña County, southeast of the New Mexico State, specifically Sunland Park, Chaparral, Anthony and surrounding areas. Residents from this county are mainly of Hispanic origin (63%), about 25% live below the poverty level, and the majority speaks Spanish. All these factors may contribute to the unawareness in preventative information and augment risks.
