Program Activities

Recycling Workshops

We will have several recycling workshops to show the public how electronics, paper, plastic, shoes, etc. can be reprocessed into new products. We will have these workshops so people get educated into what the difference can be in the amount of trash is generated if the entire Paso del Norte community would recycle.

Computer Recycling Workshop

Re-use a Shoe Workshop

KFOX Channel 14 will lead this activity where we will be collecting used tennis shoes to be sent out to Nike for shredding and refabrication of new tennis shoes.  Attendees will get prizes for bringing the most amount of tennis shoes to the Don Haskins Center during the dates of the events.

Green Film Cinema

One of the main activities of the show is the Green Film Festival.  This event will show short video clips, movies and documentaries continuously during the Exposition. The type of videos to be shown will be: Impacts of pollution in human health, saving money greenly, energy and sustainability, Green Peace videos, alternative fuels, etc. We have partnered with the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance to replicate their show displayed during the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival in Las Cruces in April 2009, which was sponsored mainly by Patagonia.

Eco-recycleable Fashion Show

Fashion shows have been a great way to bring the crowds together.  We will have our own fashion show where models and typical persons would wear clothing designed and built from recyclable materials.

Art Exhibit

The art exhibit that we will have on display is Snagged. This exhibition examines accumulation as a method of recording memory and experience. It is the latest in a series of large-scale site installations by Tom Leader Studio, a landscape architecture firm based in Berkeley, California, that creates sustainable landscapes and explores the human impact on the environment. Sarah Cowles, esteemed alumnus of Tom Leader Studio and Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture at the Knowlton School of Architecture at The Ohio State University (OSU), visited El Paso with a team of OSU students during summer 2009 to conduct on-site research about the natural and constructed landscapes of the Rio Grande Valley. This group consulted with UTEP students and faculty in an exciting collaboration between these two universities, resulting in Snagged.
